Intermediate First Aid is a workplace approved first aid course to prepare people to provide CPR with AED in addition to knowledge and skills to respond to head and spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies such as diabetes and seizures. Pre-requisite: - 12 years of age at start of course

This one-day recertification course is designed for individuals that have a valid Intermediate or Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED certificate that will soon expire. Please bring your unexpired certificate with you when you attend. Intermediate First Aid Recertifications are a challenge of both the theory and practical examinations of all mandatory skills. Prerequisites: - 12 years of age at start of course - Current Intermediate or Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED (proof must be provided in hard copy)

Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Bronze Cross: begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Pre-requisites: *The City of Leduc facilitates Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross together in a combination course. Therefore, Intermediate or Standard First Aid is a prerequisite to register for this program. •Must be age 13 at start of course •Current Intermediate or Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Bronze Cross Recert: Candidates will have multiple opportunities to be evaluated on each item. Candidates should be provided with feedback throughout the recertification course to support their success in demonstrating knowledge, skills, judgment, and fitness which they may not have used or reviewed since they were last certified. Pre-requisites: • Must be age 13 at start of course • Previously held a Bronze Cross Award • Current Intermediate or Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The Swim Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating. These competencies include: delivering education and training that focuses on development of physical skills, and/or knowledge and judgement. Pre-requisite -Must be 15 at the start of the course -Must have Bronze Cross certification (need not be current) or higher

Lifesaving Instructors are trained to teach and evaluate the three Canadian Swim Patrol Program awards, as well as the Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Distinction certifications. Instructor candidates are trained in aspects of learning as well as various approaches required to teach water rescue, first aid, and related aquatic skills in the Canadian Lifesaving Program. Candidates also learn about long-range and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision, and the principles of evaluation. The Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for most other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications.

The primary role of the National Lifeguard is the prevention of emergency situations and where this fails, the timely and effective resolution of emergencies. The National Lifeguard program is designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics. The National Lifeguard course cannot in theory or practice prepare candidates for every situation that might occur while working in Canadian aquatic environments and facilities. National Lifeguard training is designed to develop the basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision-making processes to help lifeguard evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. Pre-requisites: - Must be age 15 on last day of course -Must have Bronze Cross certification - Must have current Intermediate or Standard First Aid

NL recert is designed to continue developing an understanding of lifeguard principles, good judgement and a mature responsible attitude towards the role of a lifeguard. Pre-requisites: - Must be age 15 - Must have successfully completed the National Lifeguard certificate need not be current. - Must have current Intermediate or Standard First Aid and CPR-C

National Lifeguard Instructors (NLI) are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the National Lifeguard Pool, Waterpark, Waterfront or Surf programs. The NLI course prepares instructors to apply level 3 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating. Pre-requisites: - 18 years of age - Current National Lifeguard (any option), held for minimum 2 years in whatever stream they wish to teach (ie. NLI's wanting to teach Pool courses, must hold a current NL-Pool certification) - Lifesaving Instructor (need not be current) - Experience teaching Lifesaving Society certification programs is recommended Apprenticeship requirement - Candidates must apply to complete an apprenticeship with the Lifesaving Society following successful completion of this course.

This course will prepare Lifesaving instructors to become coaches in Lifesaving Sport. Lifesaving Sport combines athletic ability with lifesaving skills and rescue equipment. Lifesaving clubs deliver lifesaving skill knowledge, stroke correction, fitness, leadership, and competition preparation. Also, this course is a requirement for all Lifesaving Sport coaches to be allowed on deck at sanctioned competitions. Pre-requisite: 16 years old, Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)

Intermediate First Aid Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Lifesaving Society CPR, Emergency First Aid, Intermedite First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care, CPR-HCP, and Oxygen Administration programs. This course prepares instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating. Prerequisites: - 18 years of age - Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) (need not be current) - Current Intermediate First Aid or Government of Alberta workplace approved Standard First Aid
